Stage II Preparation
Upper School
Foundation I
Although we do not recommend “further study” in preparation for Stage II, the following information will help relieve some anxiety (for both parents and applicants). Below are all the details we will provide (without giving you the actual questions).
Stage II consists of:
- Testing: 20 minute written sample; 40 minute math test
- Interview: 20 minutes
Tips for the day of the testing/interview:
To the applicant:
- Get a good night’s sleep and eat breakfast.
- Use the washroom before leaving home. Although applicants will be allowed to use the washroom during the test, they will not be given extra time. There is a 20-minute break between the testing and interview.
- Place your pencils, eraser and pen in a see-through bag; opaque pencil cases will not be permitted in the examination room. Calculator, rulers and protractors are NOT permitted.
- It is a good idea to keep hydrated throughout the testing and interview. Bottled water is permitted in the examination room. Snacks can be eaten during the 20-minute break (but are not permitted in the exam room); place snacks in a see-through bag as well.
- The examination room will have a clock visible but if you want to bring a watch, make sure that it does not include a calculator or alarm.
To the parents:
- Please contact the school at 416-946-7995 the morning of the test if your child is ill.
- Carefully read the instructions on the eligibility letter that you received in late December.
- Don’t forget your identification ticket which allows your child entrance to the testing.
- Allow for traffic or inclement weather so you have ample time to arrive at the designated time (which will be indicated on your ticket). No extra time is given to latecomers. Applicants who arrive more than 15 minutes after the testing has begun will not be allowed entrance to the examination room.
- Leave your child in UTS’s care during the testing. Drop your child off at registration and return to collect him/her at the end of the testing/interview period.
- No cellphones are allowed inside the school during the testing.
- Return to pick up your child at the time indicated on your identification ticket.

Written Component (subject to change):
Applicants will be asked to respond to a statement. The written component looks for clear organization, fluent sentences, mature vocabulary and a sense of going beyond the obvious into the realms of personal response and sincerity.
Interview:
Applicants will be asked a number of questions that will reveal their character and their fit for UTS. Those children who are prepped will sound programmed. Our motto is “be yourself”; we want to get to know the real applicant.
Note: All applicants will receive notification of eligibility to UTS, by mail, the last week of February. Please do not call the school before this date.
Upper School
Students will be invited to attend an interview based on the SSAT results and report cards. The interview will be 20-30 minutes long, with the candidate being interviewed alone and then with parent(s) present.
Refer to notes at the end of the Foundation I level for interview tips.
