David Allan
David Allan is a UTS alumnus (Class of 1978) and an active member of the UTS alumni community. He serves on the UTS Board’s Affiliation Committee and, in the 1990s, was a volunteer for UTS’ Preserving the Opportunity Campaign.
David has been involved in the structured finance market for over 20 years in a number of distinct capacities. Having begun his career as a lawyer specializing in banking, project finance and securitization, David left the partnership at Toronto law firm Stikeman Elliott in 1995 to join CIBC Wood Gundy as the Head of its Canadian Securitization Group. In 2003, David became Global Head of Credit Structuring for what was then CIBC World Markets, with direct reports in Toronto, New York and London. In 2007, he joined Toronto-based structured finance boutique Coventree Inc. as its Head of Capital Markets. In the spring of 2009, David began working as a financial services and structured finance consultant, providing strategic advice to a number of new and existing participants in the Canadian structured finance market. In April of 2010, David joined forces with one of those new market participants, becoming a principal in and the Executive Chairman of the TAO Group of Companies.
David has a B.A. (International Relations) from the University of Toronto, an LL. B. from Osgoode Hall Law School and an MBA from the Schulich School of Business.
Gen Ling Chang
Gen Ling Chang was first appointed to the UTS Board as an independent Director November of 2005. Ms. Chang is currently the Coordinating Superintendent of Teaching and Learning at the Toronto District School Board. Prior to her current appointment, she was seconded from the TDSB and was appointed Senior Student Achievement Officer with the Literacy & Numeracy Secretariat, Student Achievement Division, Ministry of Education. Her work with the Literacy & Numeracy Secretariat involved working with school boards across the province to achieve the provincial strategy on excellence. An experienced and effective educator and leader, Ms. Chang holds a Masters in Linguistics from University of Lancaster, England. She has served with the Toronto DSB since 1996, as Superintendent of Education for the Toronto District School Board, overseeing 24 schools including elementary, middle and secondary, serving approximately 11,000 students; Principal, Vice-Principal and Mathematics Instructional Leader K - Grade 12. She has also worked as Lead Resource Teacher for the Department of Instruction and Staff Development at Peel DSB, as well as Senior Researcher, Department of Curriculum & Modern Languages, OISE/UT. Her education leadership and work has been on curriculum development, organizational change and large-scale improvement, and teaching and leadership capacity building based on a pursuit for excellence and equity of outcomes all students.
Andrew Dalglish
Andrew Dalglish is a respected member of Toronto's financial community and a parent of a UTS student. After graduating in 1983 with a B.Comm, Honours from Queen’s University, he joined the public accounting firm Touche Ross & Co. (now Deloitte & Touche LLP), where he achieved his Chartered Accountant designation and spent 9 years serving clients. In 1993, he joined Mackenzie Financial Corporation, one of Canada's largest independent mutual fund companies, where he has held numerous roles including Chief Operation Officer. Currently he is an Executive Vice President with responsibilities for Mackenzie’s operating subsidiaries, particularly MRS Inc.
A practical career path hasn't meant a life free of unexpected turns. A teenage sufferer of Crohn’s disease Mr. Dalglish joined the Board of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada in 1996 where he served for seven years culminating in a two-year term as National President. He also joined the Board of FundSERV Inc. in 1997 and served as Chair in 1998-9, remaining on the Board thereafter. In 1999 he was a recipient of Canada’s "Top 40 under 40" award. In addition to those roles mentioned above, Mr. Dalglish is a director or former director of four private corporations and one public agency.
Jim Fleck
Jim Fleck is a UTS alumnus (Class of 1949) and an active member of the Class of ’49 Committee and the UTS alumni community, who has donated generously and in many ways to the school through the years. Jim was recommended for nomination to the UTS Board by the UTS Alumni Association. He holds a doctorate of business administration in finance from Harvard, and has received honorary degrees from the University of Toronto and the University of Trinity College.
Jim is a highly respected long-time entrepreneur, business professor and philanthropist. He founded Fleck Manufacturing Inc. in 1954 which grew from 10 to over 3000 employees and over $100 million in sales. He has served on many boards including the Chairmanship of ATI Technologies and Alias Research. He is currently Chairman of NGRAIN Corporation, a Vancouver based provider of 3D simulation solutions for maintenance and training for the defense industry and Chairman of Business for the Arts, building partnerships between business and the arts.
Jim has taught at Harvard Business School, York University and the University of Toronto. He has also served in government as CEO of the Office of the Premier of Ontario, Secretary of the Cabinet, and Deputy Minister of Industry and Tourism. He has served as Chair of the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Ontario Minister’s Advisory Council on Arts and Culture Ontario, and Tennis Canada. He is also a member of the Chief Executives Organization and was on the Canadian Council of Chief Executives. He is an Officer of the Order of Canada.
Andre Hidi
Andre Hidi is a UTS alumnus (Class of 1977) and a past director of the UTS Alumni Association (UTSAA). Andre served as Co-Chair of the Preserving the Opportunity Campaign during which time he established the Suzanne E. Hidi Bursary at UTS. Andre was recommended for nomination to the UTS Board by the UTSAA.
Andre currently is an executive managing director at BMO Capital Markets, responsible for its Global Mergers & Acquisitions group, which consists of approximately 65 professionals located in Toronto and Chicago. Andre has advised on numerous high profile M&A transactions, including most recently BMO Financial Group's US$4.1 billion acquisition of Marshall & Isley and Newmont Mining’s C$2.3 billion acquisition of Fronteer Gold.
Andre served on the Board of Trustees of ACS Media Income Trust from 2004 to 2006 and was a member of Sick Kids Leaders from 2005 through 2010, leading the Hospital for Sick Children Foundation’s fundraising campaign at BMO Capital Markets during that time.
Prior to joining BMO Capital Markets, Andre spent 12 years with Morgan Stanley and Citigroup in New York and Toronto, following which he taught an MBA course on Mergers & Acquisitions at U of T’s Rotman School of Business for three years. Before entering business school, Andre spent two years as a professional hockey player in the Washington Capitals organization.
Andre holds an MBA from Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business as well as a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in Political Economy from the University of Toronto.
Michelle Hull
Michelle Hull is the parent of a student in the UTS class of 2016, and is currently a member of the UTS Board Advancement Committee. She is also a member of the Fundraising Committee of UTSPA. Ms. Hull earned her B.A. at Cornell University (1980), her MBA from University of Michigan (1983), and her Master of Taxation from Walsh College (1990). She is a certified public accountant and worked as an International Tax Consultant for Ernst & Young in Chicago and Detroit. Her clients included General Motors and other multinational corporations. In 1995, she moved to Canada and worked as Director of Financial Planning for Laidlaw until 2000. Ms. Hull has been heavily involved in fundraising activities for her children’s schools (both public and private) for the last 10 years and has held various positions in the parent associations of these schools. She is also a Director and Vice-President of Global Financial Studies, Inc. The company provides financial and tax consulting services including expert witness support services to clients in US, Canada, and Europe.
Prabhat Jha
Prabhat Jha is the parent of a student in the UTS class of 2017 and a key figure in epidemiology and economics of global health. He is the University of Toronto Endowed Professor in Disease Control and Canada Research Chair at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, and the founding Director of the Centre for Global Health Research (CGHR) at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto.
Prior to founding CGHR, Prabhat served as Senior Scientist for the World Health Organization, where he co-led the work on health and poverty for the Commission on Macroeconomics and Health. His advisory work has included the Government of South Africa on its national health insurance plan, and the United States Institute of Medicine on global health. His notable recognitions include The Luther Terry Award for Research on Tobacco Control (2012), The Globe and Mail 25 Transformational Canadians (2010), Top 40 Canadians under Age 40 Award (2004), the Ontario Premier’s Research Excellence Award (2004) and Gold Medal from the Poland Health Promotion Foundation (2000). Prabhat holds an M.D. from the University of Manitoba and a D.Phil. from Oxford University, where he studied as a Canadian Rhodes Scholar.
Robert Lord
Mr. Lord, the current Chair of the UTS Board of Directors, is a UTS alumnus (Class of 1958) and was recommended for nomination by the UTS Alumni Association. In addition to his role with the UTS Board, Mr. Lord was also the Vice-Chair of the UTS Building Opportunities Campaign. Mr. Lord is a Chartered Accountant who has previously served as the Vice-Chair of Ernst & Young, Chair of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants and the Royal Life Saving Society of Canada, and as a Director of the YMCA of Greater Toronto. Mr. Lord is a director or former director of four public corporations and three private corporations. He is the 2010 receipient of the HJ Crawford award for his volunteer excellence and leadership.
Nasir Noormohamed
Nasir Noormohamed is the parent of a UTS student, and is currently the chair of the UTS Advancement Committee. Nasir is the Co-Founder of Drug Intelligence Inc., which provides consulting services to some of the larger, research-based pharmaceutical companies in Canada in the areas of specialty and emerging therapies. Previously, Nasir provided management consulting services to numerous hospitals and health services organizations. He holds a Master of Health Science in Health Administration from the University of Toronto, a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Western Ontario, and the Certified Management Accountant designation. Nasir has served on the boards and executive committees of numerous national, provincial and local organizations.
Susan Opler
Susan Opler is the parent of a student in the UTS class of 2014, and is currently the chair of the Staff Liaison Committee. She is herself an UTS alumna (class of '79) and a former member of the UTS Alumni Board of Directors and as one of the first girls to attend UTS, was Co-Chair of the Celebration of 25 Years of Co-Education at the school in 1998. Ms Opler earned her B.A at McGill (1982) and her LL.B. from the University of Toronto Faculty of Law (1985). A member of the Ontario Bar since 1987, she practiced litigation for ten years as an associate and then as a partner at McCarthy Tetrault, before taking a leave from her professional practice to be at home with her two young children. In 2001, she was appointed a part-time lawyer member of the Consent and Capacity Board of Ontario (the "CCB"). In 2005, she was named Vice Chair. In her work for the CCB, Ms Opler conducts quasi-judicial hearings dealing with issues of mental health, capacity and substitute decision-making. She is also actively involved in administration of the CCB, training of members and outreach to the community. In addition to her work for the CCB, Ms Opler is a recognized expert in teaching adjudication skills to adjudicators in a wide variety of settings, both locally and internationally.
F. David Rounthwaite
Mr. Rounthwaite is a UTS alumnus (Class of 1965) and was recommended for nomination by the UTS Alumni Association. Mr. Rounthwaite currently serves as secretary of the UTS Board of Directors. During his tenure on the UTS Interim Board from 2002 to 2004, he was instrumental in the negotiation and drafting of UTS' constating documents as a corporation and an interim affiliation, services and premises agreement with the University of Toronto. After incorporation of the School, he was directly involved in the negotiation of the 2006 Affiliation Agreement with the University. Mr. Rounthwaite holds a B.A. (Hons.) from the University of Toronto, an M.Sc. (econ.) from the London School of Economics and Political Science and an LL.B. from Osgoode Hall Law School of York University. He is practicing law in Toronto and has served as a director of both public and private companies.
Donald Schmitt
Donald Schmitt is a UTS alumnus (Class of 1970) and a partner with Diamond+Schmitt Architects, an internationally recognized architectural firm renowned for its innovative design excellence in a broad range of building types. Mr. Schmitt is a graduate of the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Architecture where he was awarded the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada Medal in the thesis year. He has been Adjunct Professor at the Faculty of Architecture, University of Toronto, and Adjunct Professor and External Examiner, the School of Architecture, Dalhousie University.
Mr. Schmitt was the founding chair of the Public Art Commission for the City of Toronto, for which he was awarded the Civic Medal. He is currently a member of the Advisory Committee on Planning Design and Real Estate for the Canadian National Capital Commission and was a member of the Waterfront Toronto Design Review Panel. He is a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, a Member of the Architects’ Association of Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia and Nova Scotia, and a member of the American Institute of Architects and an Advisory board member of the Canadian Art Foundation.
