UTS wins a Silver medal at the Toronto District Tennis Tournament!

Congratulations to S5’s Michael McEown and Helena Whyte for earning the silver medal in the Toronto District OFSAA qualifier on Tuesday, May 18th. They played an extremely tough match to earn second place in which they were behind 5-2, only to come back and win by a score of 7-5! Well done team!

Denise Wong wins the Tory Shield for Public Speaking

Congratulations to Denise Wong for winning the John A. Tory Shield for Intermediate Public Speaking on Thursday, May 18th. Each competitor read a poem, and all four finalists brought their poems to life beautifully. Denise had a splendid interpretive reading of The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes.

Congratulations also go out to the other three finalists, Kalyna Franko, Jennifer Tse and Keara Yim for their spirited performances. Mr. Baker and Mr. Cope were the judges, and they had many compliments to give to the girls.

UTS finishes in 1st place at the National Biology Competition!

UTS placed first in Canada’s National Biology Competition, receiving the results on Thursday, May 17th. This is the best finish UTS has had since the Competition went National in 1998!

UTS has great results at Track and Field Metro Finals

UTS’ Track and Field team competed in the Metro Finals on Wednesday, June 24th and Thursday, May 25th.

Benoit Cyrenne once again proved he is one the best upcoming stars of the Ontario High School Track and Field scene by winning a Silver medal in the Midget Boys' 400 meter race and again in the 800 metre race. Benoit ran a sizzling 54 seconds for the 400metres and 2:11 for the 800 metres.

Benoit advances to the Provincial finals at the Etobicoke Centennial Stadium on Thursday and Saturday of next week. Earlier in the fall Benoit advanced to the Provincial finals in Cross Country - he has had a tremendous first year of high school sports.

Christine Joannou finished 6th in the girls senior long jump event. Christine has had a very successful track and field career at UTS, competing in the Provincial championships as a Junior athlete.

Gordon Bae placed tenth in the junior boys shotput. Unfortunately the Midget Girls 4 x 100 team of Ana Komparic, Janice Chiang, Yangyang Xu and Alyssa Parpia were disqualified for a baton transfer infraction (outside the zone).

Overall, this year's team has had a very successful season. Let’s cheer on Benoit in next week's Provincial Finals at Etobicoke Centennial Stadium!

UTS students succeed at Begbie Canadian History Contest

Morgan Ring and Michael Olijnyk competed in the Begbie Canadian History Contest, an annual competition open to all senior high school students across Canada. Questions are based on major events in Canadian history from 1850 to the present, with an emphasis on critical thinking skills using primary sources. This year the Canadian and World Studies Department is pleased to announce that two students did very well in this competition.

Morgan placed within the top ten, seventh overall in the country, and Michael finished within the top 200 out of over 1200 competing students - an amazing feat considering he is only an F2 student competing against high school seniors.

UTS Foundation Swim team winners at Swimming Championships

On Tuesday, May 2nd, the UTS Foundation Swim Team competed in the Toronto District Elementary Schools South Championships at Riverdale Collegiate.

They had an incredible meet and finished first overall in a field of 22 teams! The team came away with 36 top six races and 26 in the top three.

The UTS team competed in 12 relays, they won five and finished in the top three in 11.

The F1 boys also won the conference for their division, making it UTS' first elementary banner for swimming!

Special mention go to Emily Luk and Samantha Mathialagan, both novice swimmers who placed 4th in 50 Free and 12th of 25 in 25 Back, respectively. Quite an accomplishment for students who've never swam competitively before!

Adam Robarts wins the Silver medal at the National Science Fair

Congratulations to Adam Robarts for winning the Silver medal in the Junior Engineering Division at the National Science Fair in Quebec for his project Harnessing Wind Energy on the weekend on Saturday, May 20th. He is also the recipient of a $700 prize and $1500 scholarship to Western University.

UTS wins 2nd place in the Reach for the Top Competition Provincials, qualifying for the Nationals

UTS’ Reach for the Top team buzzed its way to 2nd place at the Reach Competition Provincials on the weekend of Saturday, May 13th, qualifying them for the Reach Nationals in Edmonton on Saturday, May 29th and Sunday, May 30th.

The Reach for the Top team leapt from 9th place to 2nd (of 38 teams) after a weekend of intense competition. In an incredible show of skill, speed, and charm, the team of dominated the Provincial Tournament with strong scores that put UTS into the playoffs – making UTS the only Toronto team in the playoffs!

Jonathon Schneider wins 3rd in the OAPT Physics Contest

Congratulations to Jonathan Schneider for his 3rd place finish in the challenging Ontario Association of Physics Teachers Physics contest.

Jonathan also earned a perfect score earlier this year on the AMC 10 contest and went on to answer 12 of 15 questions correctly on the American Invitational Mathematics Exam.

UTS wins 3 Gold medals and 1 Bronze at the Provincial Concours Oratoires

On Saturday, May 13th, four UTS students swept the Provincial Concours D'art Oratoire. This challenging event tests secondary students’ eloquence in French with original speeches, presentations and on-the-spot questions based on their presentations.

Lujia Lin won the Gold medal in the 9-10 Core French category for his speech
La resilience, and a $150 prize.

Rachel Johnston won the Gold medal in the 11-12 Extended category for Une lueur d'espoir en Zambie, and a $1000 prize.

Ching See Lau won the Gold medal in the 11-12 Immersion category for La double appurtenance, and a $1000 prize.

Helena Whyte won the Bronze medal in the 11-12 Core French category for her speech L'apathie politique chez les jeunes canadiens, and a $200 prize.

Rachel and Ching See are invited to the National Concours Oratoire at the University of Ottawa in two weeks. The French public-speaking contest brings together senior high school students from across Canada who came first at the provincial/territorial levels. This is the first time that UTS will be represented at a national level in French!

Rafael Krichevsky wins second place at National Latin Competition

Kudos to Rafael Krichevsky for winning 2nd place in the Canadian Association of Classics annual contest for Latin Sight Translation for High School Students. The results arrived a little late, since Rafael competed back on January 17th.

He faced many highly skilled students of Latin from across the country and was edged out by only one from Toronto French School.

UTS students winners of OFSAA Badminton Tournament

Congratulations to Maggie Siu and Karen Au Yeung for winning the bronze medal in the "A" flight at the OFSAA Badminton Tournament in Timmins. It was hard fought and they played extremely well.

They cruised to the semi-finals this year, with Karen only losing one game all season! Maggie had a slightly slower start with two early loses, but she remained undefeated the rest of her season!

UTS team winners at Fulford League Debate Tournament

UTS debaters Sima Atri and Alexandra Aliferis placed 2nd and 4th in the Junior Division at the Fulford League Debate Tournament on Saturday, May 6th. They were the top ranked team as a result, and won the Brian Jones Trophy!

Kishan Shani, a rising junior debater, represented UTS in the Senior Division. He faced very tough competition with both grace and wit.

UTS has an amazing group of young debaters this year. As a result of the strong showing by UTS’ teams all year long, UTS ranked second in the overall standings, narrowly missing winning the Coaches Cup.

Congratulations to Sima, Alexandra, Kishan, Eleanor Vaughan, Lujia Lin, Salvator Cusimano and Rameez Sewani for their contributions to Fulford Debating this year.

UTS students honoured at Sears Ontario Drama Festival

On Saturday, April 8th, the Sears Ontario Drama Festival 2006 honoured UTS with two awards. Allie Lalonde & Brian Unger in S6 received an Award of Excellence for Writing for their play "Elbow Room" and Ching S. Lau in S5, whose incredible performance received a well-deserved Award of Merit.

UTS students’ video artwork recognized

Congratulations to Andrew Campana, Clara Cosco, Maria Alexandrescu and Rakael Deverell from S5 on their video artwork entitled Mendline. Their creativity and hard work has been recognized with a nomination as a finalist in the 2006 Toronto Student Film Festival!

UTS Student, Leslie Newcombe (F2) Wins First Place at Toronto Regional CanWest CanSpell Competition

Leslie Newcombe (F2) beat out four other finalists to win the Toronto Regional Final in the CanWest CanSpell National Spelling Bee, making her one of Canada 's 28 best young spellers. She will now compete at the National Finals in Ottawa next month.

Leslie became the winner after correctly spelling ‘paduasoy’.

UTS Students win 2nd, 3rd and 4th place in Hamilton Brain Bee

Congratulations go to UTS students for taking 2nd, 3rd and 4th place in the Hamilton Brain Bee Competition. Sabrina Nurmohamed (M4) won 2nd place, Carol Cui (S5) took 3rd place and Jonathan Gregory (S6) landed 4th place. The three UTS students beat all but 1 of the 22 students who participated in this event.

21 of our German students attended the regional Ontario High School German Contest at the University of Toronto on Thursday, 23rd February.

Seven schools from the Toronto area were represented, close to 80 students altogether, a record attendance, and UTS dominated the top ranks of all 3 categories.

All of the UTS students who are beyond first year German level placed very well in their respective categories.

Biology Achievements


Chris Yau (S6) and Andrew Wang (S6) have both been invited to attend the National Biology Olympiad Training Camp in April 2006. Only a dozen students from across Canada receive this invitation. A tremendous achievement from Chris and Andrew!

Science Excellence


This past summer, 22 UTS Students gained entry to the prestigious SHAD Valley Science & Entrepreneurial Experience.

The Shad Valley program is designed to show bright young Canadian students the links between business and science and give them exposure to careers in technology and entrepreneurship and refore, acceptance eight of the 22 UTS students brought home gold.

Brenda Chiang (S5), Catherine Davis (S6), Anjan Devaraj (S5), Katrina Hui (S5), Ricky Jrearz (S5), Chiara Meneguzzi (S5), Ljiljana Stanic (S5), and Veronica Tsou (S5), as members of gold winning teams, were all honoured at the RBC/SHAD Entrepreneurial Cup on October 27th 2005 .

Leaders of the Future


On the weekend of November 12th and 13th 2005, 33 UTS students ventured to Montreal to attend the Secondary Schools United Nations Symposium (SSUNS).

The SSUNS is Canada's premier model UN conference for high school students, the objective of which is to educate young people about current international issues through interactive debate in simulated United Nations committees. It draws over 800 participants from across the country and abroad.

The students spent huge numbers of hours in committee sessions every day discussing world issues and foreign policy.

The students brought home 5 delegate awards and an honourable mention.

Cynthia Smithers (S6), representing Burkina Faso on the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, received the Lester B. Pearson award for peacebuilding.

Allie Lalonde (S5), as the Cabinet Liason on the CIDA Committee, received the Lester B. Pearson award for peacebuilding.

Rebecca Baskin (S5), representing Tanzania on the Security Council, received the Nellie McClung award for advocacy.

Ljiljana Stanic (S5), as a member of the Soviet Politburo, received the Lester B. Pearson award for peacebuilding.

Matt Chou (S5), as a Republican fundraiser on the American Election 2008 Crisis, received an award.

Jenn Luong (S5), representing Poland on the Special Political and Decolonization Committee, received an honourable mention.
