BADMINTON

UTS Badminton placed second in Championship

The UTS Varsity Badminton Team had quite a challenge Tuesday, May 15th in their Championship Match against Riverdale. Riverdale is a team that has won the south region team championship for almost 20 years! It was an intimidating sight walking into their gym and hanging just above the courts are the many championship banners that record the victories they have collected over these years.

With a few strategic line-up changes, the team came into the championship with a plan to knock Riverdale off their banner. All the teams played excellent matches and it was evident that the rivalry between these two schools was friendly - a sign of respect that they had for each other's play.

In the end, Riverdale beat UTS with an overall team score of 9-8 - it was a difference of 4 points in two of our matches. The tight score made it tough to swallow, but considering who the team was up against, they were proud of their second place finish. The team improved their score against Riverdale and had completed a very successful season! Here’s to ending Riverdale’s reign next year!

On Wednesday, May 2nd, Victor Tsang, Maggie Siu and Connie Wong headed off to Kitchener, Waterloo for the 2007 OFSAA Badminton Championships from May 2nd to 5th. This was Victor and Connie's first time attending OFSAA, so they were all very excited to represent UTS in the provincial championships! Both groups placed in the Top 8 – Victor in B flight Boys’ Singles and Maggie and Connie in A flight Girls’ Singles. Congratulations!

UTS Badminton qualifies for OFSAA!

UTS was represented exceptionally well at the TDSSAA Badminton Qualifier by Maggie Siu, Connie Wong and Victor Tsang at Centennial College, Wednesday, April 18th and Thursday, April 19th. Playing with great skill and sportsmanship, all three qualified for OFSAA on May 3rd to 5th at the University of Waterloo!

Maggie Siu and Connie Wong were first round winners in their game against Earl Haig, decisively beating them 25-5. They continued to play strongly throughout the tournament, placing 4th overall.

Victor Tsang competing in the Boys Singles Play was undefeated in his first day of play, with two wins. He defeated Woburn Collegiate 21-2 and Don Mills C.I. 15-11, 15-2 in the second round.
Victor beat Mowat C.I. in two games and lost only to a nationally ranked player, placing him 2nd – a great achievement considering the competition!

Congratulsion to Maggie, Connie and Victor and all the best at OFSAA in May!!

UTS making a run for badminton champs

Congratulations go out to Maggie Siu and Connie Wong who won the Badminton South Region Championships at Riverdale in girls' doubles at Riverdale on Wednesday, April 11th. The girls will now move on to the Toronto District Championships (this week) to hopefully gain entry into OFSAA. Last year Maggie won a bronze medal in OFSAA badminton girls’ doubles “A” flight.

On Thursday, April 12th Victor Tsang also won the Badminton South Region Championships in boys’ singles at Harbord on Thursday, April 12th. Victor will also join Maggie and Connie at the Toronto District Championships in hopes of gaining entry into OFSAA.

The team’s rookie pair, Cheryl Young and Michael Wan (M4) competed in the mixed doubles draw but had an early exit from the competition as they met with some more experienced players in the first two rounds. They had great attitude on the court and played a commendable game for first-time players, earning 6 points in the first round and 13 in the next.

Jason Lum and Franklin Ko were faced two tough opponents in their doubles' draw but played some great points and were a great support to Victor!

On Wednesday, April 18th, Maggie Siu, Connie Wong and Victor Tsang will compete in the TDSSAA District Qualifier. Good luck – GO BLUES GO!

Varsity Badminton off to a flying start

The Blues Varsity Badminton team started the season off with two convincing wins over East York Collegiate (15-3) and Marc Garneau Collegiate (15-1), however the team knew they’d be up for a challenge in their home game against Riverdale on Thursday, April 5th.

Although Riverdale was victorious, the Blues put up respectable scores with an overall team score of 5-12. Congratulations goes out to Maggie Siu and Connie Wong (girls' A doubles) who brought the team’s only win (15-0, 15-1) against Riverdale. Also to Victor Tsang and Judith Ma (mixed A doubles) and Denise Wong and Nicola Yang (girls' B doubles) who challenged Riverdale, taking them to a third set in each of their matches and earned UTS more points.

A fantastic start to the season! GO BLUES!

The UTS Boys’ Rugby continue a spectacular season, defeating Jarvis CI, 44 to 0, on Tuesday, May 22nd! The Blues ended regular season play in first place, undefeated and zero points scored against. The outstanding effort was led by the skilled play of Lyndon Shopsowitz and Stephen Rowlands.

The Boys’ Rugby team continued to advance through the playoffs by defeating Jarvis CI, 35 to 0, in quarter-final action on Thursday, May 24th. The team played a very strong game both offensively and defensively. Stephen "Crazy Legs" Rowlands led all scorers with three tries. The team thanks Vice-Principal Ms. Dorothy Davis for her support on the field!

The Boys will play their semi-final playoff game this Tuesday, May 29th. Good luck team!

UTS Boys’ Rugby – unstoppable and true Blues!

On Tuesday, May 15th, the boys team played their best game of the season deafeating the Western Tech Colts, 47 to 0. Stephen Rowlands, Andrew Chan and Alex Vasic scored the majority of the points. The team moved the ball very well using a variety of passes and kicks. Again the Defence played a stellar game with solid tackling and blanket like coverage on their backs. The victory kept the Blues undefeated and tied in first place with the Central Tech Blues.

Thursday, May 17th was the battle of the Blues, with the UTS Blues facing off against the Central Blues. The boys did it again, winning 6 to 0, proving who the true Blues are! The win, probably the grandest victory in Blues Rugby history, pitted the two first place teams against each other.

UTS controlled the play, nullified the Central Tech "speed" factor and continuously won the scrum and line-out battles to eventually set up some excellent scoring opportunities. Andrew Chan displayed a thunderous foot by kicking two solid penalty kicks giving our team the 6 points.

The win solidifies the team’s hold on first place with one game left in the regular season. The win also gives UTS local neighbourhood bragging rights to the "Blues" nickname. The team has not had a point scored against all season - impressive!!!

The boys final regular season game is today against Jarvis C.I at Central Tech field. Quarter-final playoff action starts on Thursday May 24th.

The UTS Blues dominated again in Boys’ Rugby action against Riverdale on Tuesday, May 8th. The team pummeled Riverdale, winning 32-zip!

Stephen Rowlands and Andrew Chan led the Blues in scoring while Lyndon Shopsowitz, Michael McEown and Salvador Cusimano played solid defense. Rookies Jacob Gurin, Isaac Kates-Rose and Victor Poon all played solid games in their Rugby debuts.

On Thursday, May 10th the Boys' Rugby team defeated Martingrove CI, 10 to 0, to remain tied in first place. The Blues displayed solid defence and countered with some dazzling offensive runs by Stephen Rowlands, Jamie Besant, Kiva Dickison and Andrew Chan. Andrew and Stephen both scored tries for the team. Coach Mr. Jeff Kennedy would like to send out a special thanks to all of the team’s fans (the parents) and former UTS Coach and Teacher John Wardle.

Boys’ Rugby wallop last year’s champs

The Blues beat the pre-season favourites and last year’s league champions, North Toronto C.I., 10 to 0. With Andrew Chan’s speed and Stephen “Crazy Legs” Rowlands (S5) running, the team proved unstoppable. Kelvin Lin made great calls for plays and Lyndon Shopsowitz bulled over the opposition with his aggressive runs and solid tackling.

Andrew scored on a beautiful 60 yard run, two quick cuts followed by a burst of speed. Stephen scored the other try on a methodical, ball controlled score in the first half. Congratulations to the entire team for the inspired effort.

Undefeated!!

COED VOLLEYBALL

Coed Volleyball play their best match to finish the season

On Tuesday, May 22nd UTS’ Co-Ed Volleyball team took on Ursula Franklin Academy (UFA) to play a winner-take-all Wild Card match, after finishing the season with a 3-3 record. The winner would move on to the South Region Championship tournament.

The first game was not looking well at all, with two of the UFA servers going on disheartening 6-point runs, and UTS’ servers never managing more than one or two at a time. Although the team came on strong as the game progressed, the early hole was too deep, and UTS lost 25-19.

Game 2 offered a more evenly matched affair, with the score very close through much of the game though the team was gradually falling behind. Then Lester Liao (S6) went on a real tear, hammering in 12 consecutive serves, some of them aces, as UFA completely fell apart. UTS won the game 25-21, evening up the match!

The third game continued where the second had left off, with UFA often failing to defend against the serve and also making considerable mistakes in their positioning, so that easy points sometimes dropped between players who were each waiting for the other to jump in for the save. UTS won with a very convincing 25-11 score.

UFA picked up their play while UTS didn't, and even a late surge and Lester's vicious serves, couldn't make up for early mistakes. From being down 16-8, the team actually took a lead briefly, but then UFA came roaring back, winning 25-18.

By then both teams were fatigued and the fifth, tie-breaking game is played to only 15 points, with less room to have early mistakes. The pressure was on as the score was 14-13 UFA, but the fatigue got the better of the team and UFA won.

Nonetheless, coach Mr. David Cope commends the team, as this match was the best UTS has played all year. “They battled it out, refused to give in, supported each other, and ultimately took the loss as a team.”

Congratulations to the team for a successful season: team captains Claire Leewing and Lester Liao, starters Peter Goshulak, Ching See Liao, Daniel Chan, Jason Chan, and Abi Vijenthira, and Curtis Lai, Jeff Ho, Amy Chow, and Emma Barrett.

Co-ed Volleyball has a smashing season debut

UTS’ Co-ed Volleyball team’s first official game of the season was an exciting one against Forest Hill C.I. on Wednesday, April 18th.

With the referee late, the teams played a friendly game to warm up, with UTS pounding Forest Hill 7-1 – then the referee arrived.

UTS’ steely determination seemed to give way, for a first set that teetered back and forth without momentum, resulting in a dispiriting loss in the first round.

Undaunted, the team scrapped its way through the next set, still a close affair, and managed a win. The game was 1-1, but the Blues weren't running on full steam yet.

The big turnaround came in the third set. Late in the set, with only a few points left for a UTS win, Forest Hill knocked one into our backcourt, caroming off one of our defenders and sailing sideways and out. With a reckless determination, Peter Goshulak sprinted, leapt, crashed and rolled, managing to get the ball back into play – and saving the point!!

In the third and final set, the bench came up big, with Emma Barrett and Amy Chow stepping in and keeping the momentum right on track. Fortunately, as Co-Ed Volleyball is really a kind of all-star team of our best male and female players, with the third set being the strongest and UTS clinching the win.

Playing also with considerable determination and skill were Lester Liao, Daniel Chan, Jason Chan, and Abi Vijenthira, supported by Jeff Ho and Curtis Lai.

A fantastic season debut!! GO BLUES!

GIRLS' RUGBY

Girls wrap up Rugby season

On Tuesday, May 15th, the girls rugby team played their quarter-final game against Lawrence Park. The team arrived a tad late because of AP exams and were on the field as soon as they arrived. Lawrence Park took advantage of their warm-up time and came out strong, scoring 3 tries in the first 12 minutes of the game. The girls recouped after a water break and were able to keep the play in Lawrence Park's half for most of the rest of the game, however they couldn't come back from the early deficit and after two near-tries, one of which was held-up by the opponent (an opponent gets a hand under the ball invalidating the try), the game finished in Lawrence Park's favour.

The girls had a solid season and made excellent progress, learning from each game. Congratulations girls!

Girls’ Rugby in the Quarter-Finals!

The Girls' Rugby team had an amazing showing in their final league game against Northern on Thursday, May 10th, beating them 10-7. It was an impressive win considering the team started the game two players down and played the entire second half three players down!

Everything the girls had learned in the rest of their season play came together and the team formed an almost impenetrable wall against the much larger Northern team.

This win qualified the girls for their quarter final game tomorrow afternoon. Best of luck Blues!

A slippery game for the Girls’ Rugby team

On Thursday, April 26th, the Girls’ Rugby team played against Leaside in a monsoon of a rainstorm.

They gave a fearless showing: neither the slippery mud-pit that was the field nor the much larger and more experienced Leaside team held back the Blues. Despite the girls’ best efforts, Leaside won 17-0 with some quick, around-the-outside runs from three of their girls, but the team held their own with some tough tackling and scrummaging. Great effort girls!

A breakout season opener for Girls’ Rugby

It was Blues vs. Blues as the girls took on Central Tech in their season opener on Thursday, April 19th. The Girls’ Rugby team definitely earned their name, annihilating Central Tech 25-0.

Both UTS and Central Tech have fairly new teams, but several of UTS’ more experienced players were able to put the pressure on the Central Tech team resulting in the team’s outstanding victory.

Captain and Scrum Half Melinda Naylor scored 3 tries for UTS, and veteran players Ashley Cheung and Jennifer Archibald scored 1 try each. All the newer girls put in tough performances too and learned a lot about the game as the referee graciously explained every call in detail.

Another great season start!! GO BLUES!

GIRLS' SENIOR SOCCER

A solid performance for Senior Girls’ Soccer at OFSSA

The Senior Girls’ Soccer team put in a solid performance at OFSSA, the provincial girls’ soccer championship, in Windsor Monday, June 4th and Tuesday, June 5th.

The girls tied both of their round robin games on Day 1. Maria Cusimano did all the scoring for UTS and Coach Mr. Garth Chalmers could not say enough about her skill, saying “she produced three highlight-reel goals.” Last year Maria also had a great performance at OFSAA with the Senior Girls’ Soccer team.

The ties put the pressure on to win on Day 2, and the Blues were up against Trinity College, a team that had not lost yet this season (their record was 12 wins, one tie). Watching them warm up, one could see that they had a lot of skill and were well organized. The Blues’ defensive line held fast through the first half, clearing everything that came their way. In addition, the team’s rookie keeper - Alexandra Aliferis - made a couple of outstanding saves. As the second half started the girls began to actually take the play to TCS and had some good runs at their net. At the twenty minute mark, Mikhaela Meznaric and Sarah Coyne connected on a free kick from Maria, with Sarah putting UTS up 1 - 0. For twenty nail-biting minutes the Blues defense held strong and when the ref ended the game, it felt like the Blues had won the tournament, not simply qualified for the playoffs!

In the quarter final, the girls were weary but had a good warm-up and found themselves very evenly matched with a school from London. The Blues kept looking for an opportunity, but could not find a way through their defence. At the end of the first half, the girls were down 1-0. UTS came out hard in the second half, but again no scoring opportunities developed. With 15 minutes left, the Blues started to strategize ways to penetrate their wall of defenders. The girls made a few moves and generated a great opportunity, only to be turned away by their keeper who made a great save. The score ended 2 - 0, as did UTS’ OFSSA tournament for this year.

Congratulations to the team for a great effort and wonderful season! GO BLUES!

Sr. Girls’ Soccer fight hard for a chance at OFSAA

The Sr. Girls’ Soccer team wrapped up a very tough season with a hard fought victory against a strong young team from College Francais on Thursday, May 10th, giving the team a chance to go to OFSAA.

Luck was with the team this game. Rather than hitting the post or cross bar as they did against others, the team had two goals in the first half, which was enough to hang on for a 2 - 1 victory. The second half was a tense affair as College threw everything at the team, including a few elbows and shoulders!

This season the Blues were moved to the east where they had to face the two powerhouse teams of East York and Northern. One of these teams makes the city final almost every year.

Nonetheless, the girls fought hard in every game and improved as a team. While the Blues didn't beat these teams, they did force every game to be decided by one goal and had many of our own opportunities.

UTS Tennis wins Bronze at OFSSA!

Congratulations to Josh Budman and Cyrus Elmpak-Mackie for placing 3rd at OFSSA, the provincial high school tennis championship on Wednesday, June 6th. A highlight for the boys came in the fourth round when they beat their arch rivals from Northern 8-7 in a nail-biting tie-break. The boys had never beat this team from Northern before in their previous encounters. They also played a virtually flawless 8-1 match to win their bronze medal finish. The future of UTS Tennis looks bright as Cyrus and Josh are only in grades 9 and 10 – they will be a force to be reckoned with over the next few years!

ULTIMATE FRISBEE

Ultimate Frisbee wrapping up the season

On Tuesday, May 8th, the Ultimate Frisbee team played Western Tech. After a slow season start, UTS gave Western Tech a defensive challenge and tied the game 7-7.

Special mention for all the game point-scorers: Daniel Lam for two points, boys’ captain Mark Walker one point, girls’ captain Karthika Muthuramu one point and Michael Mai one point. Amanda Giang and Jim Robson round out the points at one each.

It was only Amanda’s second ultimate game and her first point of the season! She also made many great catches as well. Jim also had some great defensive stops and catches. The game’s highlight was Jason Leung's dramatic diving catch!

On Thursday, May 10th, the team played a do-or-die home game against Parkdale. It was a must-win game for UTS to advance to the playoffs, and everyone played with heart and energy from the start. With the scored tied 15 minutes into the game, UTS hit a roadblock when starter Daniel Lam twisted his ankle once again. Spirits low, the team’s defence went down, and Parkdale went on a 5-0 run to close the half. UTS tried to catch up in the second half, but it was too late. The final score was 16-7, placing UTS out of playoff contention.

Special mention to Nam Jin Yoon for rebounding from an off game, perfectly setting up plays and assisting on many points. Also, great work from point scorers Daniel Leibovitz, for two, Michael Mai for one and Jason Leung for another.

The team thanks everyone who came out to the game to support the team.

Ultimate Frisbee onto a slow start

The Ultimate Frisbee team played their season opener against last year’s city champs, Humberside, on Tuesday, May 1st. Despite missing star player Daniel Lam because of an ankle injury and captain Mark Walker because of the flu, UTS played hard until the last second. However, experience was on their opponents’ side, as UTS started 7 rookies. In true UTS style, stand-in captain Anthony Yu gave the final score in these linear equations:

5x + 2y = 42
8x + 3y = 64

where x is UTS's final score, and y is Humberside's final score. (Answer: 2-16)

Special mentions go to Matthew Li, assistant captain, for scoring the first point for UTS and Kyle Tsang, for scoring the last point for UTS. The team thanks coaches Ms. Jennifer Pitt-Lainsbury and Ms. Sarah Cescon for their support from the sidelines.

On Friday, May 4th, the Ultimate Frisbee team looked to achieve their first win of the season against Lawrence Park. Even though the team was short-handed with many players away at the Classics Conference and studying for SATs, UTS played with great spirit and heart. However, Lawrence Park had home-court advantage, for Lawrence Park's "field" was more like a beach, with no grass to be seen! UTS lost a nail-biter to Lawrence Park, even though the score (6-12) implied a different story.

Special mention goes out to Thilo Schaefer for his defensive stops, calmly picking apart Lawrence Park's plays. Also to Michael Mai for UTS game high 2 points (2 tied), both points requiring Michael (5' 6") to run faster and jump higher than his 6'0" opponent. Daniel Lam came back from an ankle injury to score the first point for UTS on a diving catch (he had 2 total).

Come cheer on the team at UTS' home opener tomorrow afternoon at Robert's Street Field against Western Tech.

The team’s diligent and almost daily practice paid off, with the team playing very well. They played five games, with one tie and many very close scores.

Everyone had a lot of fun and kept their spirits up – for many beginners on the team, it was their first taste of what “real ultimate” is like!

Congratulations!

WINTER 2006 SEASON HIGHLIGHTS

ICE HOCKEY

Boys’ Ice Hockey Season

The Boys’ Ice Hockey team finished a respectable sixth place in their regular season, qualifying them for the TDSSAA Tier 1 Quarterfinals on Tuesday, February 20th where they’ll face off against Lawrence Park C.I.

In UTS’ four year resurgence of ice hockey, the team has steadily improved every season, making it to the Tier 1 division of their league this year.

The coaches and referees have all been impressed with the improvement and competitiveness of the team – both thanks to the coaching of two UTS Alum, Shawn Beard and Ana Shapiro.

The team has received excellent leadership and dedication from its senior S6 players of Lyndon Shopsowitz (Defense and Captain), Kelvin Lin (Defense), Michael McEown (Right Wing), Stephen Crawford (Left Wing) and Riley Brandt (Centre).

The future of UTS hockey looks promising and bright, as demonstrated by the commitment and dedication of the team’s M3 Rookies: Andrew Kowakzyszyn (Defense), Thomas Menzefricke (Centre) and Yibo Duan (Right Wing).

The team would like to thank everyone for their support and for a fun and exciting season.

SKIING

Ski Team success

Congratulations to the Alpine Ski team, who had a successful run at the Toronto City Championships on Wednesday, February 14th. Despite the biting cold, it was a great day for skiing with terrific snow conditions at Mount St. Louis Moonstone.

The Level One Girls, Kasia Konopacki, Renee Tong and Silvia Vlad and Eleanor Vaughn, all placed well in each of their Giant Slalom and Slalom runs. And as a team they placed third in Slalom and fourth overall, earning championship medals!

Samuel Levy, qualified for OFSAA, skiing in the Level 2 Boys, which takes place February 25th to 27th at Blue Mountain in Collingwood!

Ski Team Race Results

The UTS Ski Team, in its’ first season in many years, has had some very successful results in the two preliminary races of the year. The team consists of Kasia Konopacki, Renee Tong and Silvia Vlad in S6, Eleanor Vaughn and Anthony Vaz in S5, and Andrew Kowalczyszyn and Samuel Levy in M3.

UTS Ski Team at Mount St. Louis Moonstone

The first race of the season was a Giant Slalom on January 11th at Mount St Louis Moonstone. Despite the poor snow conditions, everyone skied well and considered their results a personal best. First-time racers Silvia, Kasia and Renee placed 10th, 11th and 14th, respectively, and gave UTS a 5th place overall team score in the very competitive Level One Girls division. Eleanor and Anthony, also competing for the first time, met their goals of navigating the many gates of the challenging course. Andrew and Samuel, the two experienced racers on the team, were a huge help providing advice to their teammates, and placed 11th and 13th respectively in their Level 2 Boys division. Altogether this was a great beginning for a new team!

The second race, a Slalom held on February 7th, also at Mount St Louis Moonstone, had great ski conditions, with lightly falling snow which developed into knee deep powder by day's end! Slalom is a much more challenging discipline – tighter gates requiring more dynamic and rapid turns – but everyone continued to ski well and had a great time. The day’s highlight was Silvia’s 9th place finish in her division.

Wednesday, February 14th is the Toronto City Championships consisting of both Giant Slalom and Slalom races, with the fastest teams qualifying for OFSAA. Wish us luck!

GIRLS' FOUNDATION VOLLEYBALL

F1/2 Girls’ Volleyball team Tournament finalists!

Congratulation to the F1/2 Girls’ Volleyball team, who were finalists in the Toronto South League Tournament at G.A. Brown on Wednesday, February 7th. Lead by team captain Jackie Hung, the girls qualified for the city play-offs this week!

It was a tough tournament start, with the height of the other girls particularly intimidating. After a rough start, the girls tied the first game against Glenview and went on to win three games in a row! Team spirit was sky-high and at that moment absolutely clear that UTS was going to be #1 after the round robin – which the team was.

The girls confidently won the semi-final against Cosburn in two sets, taking the lead after the first set. But the all-day play proved a little too draining in the end, with the team losing the final game against a very strong D.A. Morrison. Overall, it was still an excellent result, with the girls qualifying for the city play-offs and winning 11 games in a row!

Serving and receiving, the teams’s weaker points, were excellent. Free-balls were precise and strong, particularly by Amy Wong and Jackie Hung. Coach Mr. Serguei Ianine noted “the girls played smart and definitely used their heads!”

The team showed incredible spirit during the whole tournament, even from the bench, with other coaches even noting "there’s something special in these girls!" The walls of the gym echoed with the girls favourite cheer "BLUES on two! One, two... BLU-U-U-ES!!!"

Congratulations again to all the girls on the team: Jackie Hung, Amy Wong, Rebecca Xu, Lauren Katz, Shivon Yim, Winnie Cheng, Claire Peng, Fern Famoutar, Tasha Stansbury, Irene Cheng, Eliza Pope, and Grace Kim as well as their coaches, S6 students Lester Liao and Peter Goshulak and Mr. Serguei Ianine.

The girls will square off against Don Mills Middle School in the city quarter-finals on Tuesday, February 13th.

Good luck girls! GO BLUES!

GIRLS' SENIOR VOLLEYBALL

Tough season finish for the Sr. Girls’ Volleyball team

The Sr. Girls’ Volleyball team played a tight semifinal game against Riverdale on Tuesday, February 13th. In what was a painfully close game, the girls lost in 3 sets, with the score a tight 15-12 for Riverdale.

Whenever UTS faces off against Riverdale, they do it in a big way, always having a crowd pleasing and ref pleasing match. UTS Coach Ms. Kris Ewing commended both teams, saying “they have a ton of heart and a determination that never falters.”

The team wants to thank everyone for their support and for a great season!

Sr. Girls’ Volleyball go to the semi finals!

The Senior Girls are wrapping up what’s been an excellent season so far! In a match that was a little too close for comfort, the Senior Girls’ Volleyball team won against Monarch Park on Wednesday, February 7th. The girls won in two sets, with the last set score 17-15.

Their tight win led the girls to play Ursula Franklin Academy, the #1 school in the west division, in the quarter-finals on Thursday, February 8th. The Senior Girls were the underdog in match, but they played hard and steady throughout - digging balls coming hard from the left, right and middle. Both teams played smart finding the holes in each others' defense during offensive attacks. It was another nail-biter, but it appeared that the team had come in very ready to get the job done and they certainly did!

The team has earned a spot in the SEMI-FINALS with this well-earned victory. Semi-finals will be played on Tuesday, February 13th, but the girls’ opponent is yet to be determined - Riverdale or Humberside!

Go Senior Girls! Go Blues

Senior Girls’ Volleyball Team Tournament Champions!

Congratulations to the Senior Girls Volleyball Team who won the Monarch Park Lion's Den Tournament on Friday, February 2nd. The girls had had a second place finish in the tournament last year and were determined to win this year!

The team had some very exciting matches in pool play that resulted in a second place finish, pitting the girls against Riverdale in the Semi-Finals. The day before the girls lost a heart-wrenching game against Riverdale (17-15 in the third set) in league play and the girls were more than ready to face them again. The match was almost identical to the one played previously, however the girls turned the outcome around, taking the third set 15-11!

The girls entered the Championship Finals playing Northern S.S. Coming off an amazing win over Riverdale, the girls remained game-ready and tore through the Northern Red Knights, winning the championship in 2 sets!!!

Coach Ms. Kris Ewing is proud of the girls, saying they “played with incredible heart, amazing defense and smart and powerful offensive attacks.”

Go Blues!!

WRESTLING

Jennifer Archibald wrestles at National Championships

UTS student Jennifer Archibald represented the Central Toronto Wrestling Club, coached by U of T wrestling coach Mike Quinsey, at the National Wrestling Championships in Whitby over the weekend. For only a second year wrestler, this is quite an accomplishment!

Although Jennifer lost two tough and close matches, this sets her up well for next year as she is one of the favorites to capture the Provincial Open Title.

UTS’ Curling season draws to a close

UTS’ Curling teams played their last regular season games on Monday, February 19th. All three teams enjoyed the season, with UTS 2 (Rahul Bhayani, Aaron Kates Rose, Michael McEown and Raman Srivastava) placing second in the B division, qualifying them to advance to the league playoffs! UTS 2 will also play in an all-day tournament on March 6th at High Park. Coach Ms. Julie Stoyka thanks everyone for their support and for a great season.

Best of luck UTS 2! GO BLUES!

A well-played curling tournament

The UTS Curling teams played well on Friday, February 9th at the TDSSAA Tournament. Coach Ms. Julie Stoyka said the curling played was “strategic, smart, and well-executed.”

The girls (Colleen, Yen, Amanda and Yi) went into a hard first match against Etobicoke Collegiate, and though they lost to the team that would eventually take the Gold, the UTS girls team outscored every other team ECI met up with later. The loss bumped the girls into the B level where they met a great Humberside team and unfortunately UTS came up short. The girls played valiantly, but it just wasn't enough to take them to the next level.

The boys team (Raman, Rahul, Michael, Aaron and Anthony) played an even match against Scarlett Heights - until the second half - when UTS cleaned up and advanced to the second round of play. Meeting the Rosedale team, they were confident going in, but Rosedale's skip was a little too much for our team to handle! After two ends we were down by 4. The third end brought UTS back to a score of 4-3 - with an impressive shot by Raman, but they couldn't keep the momentum and Rosedale took the game. Down, but not out, the boys played Northern for the final game. With thoughts of the semi-formal on their minds, our boys team suffered a pretty severe loss and called the game after 6 ends (of 8).

It was a long day but well played, and all curlers now have more ambition to win in the coed league!

Curling teams sweep up on Monday, January 15th!

For the first time ever, all THREE of UTS’ Curling teams won on the same day! It was a thrilling and tense afternoon.

UTS 1 (Colleen McKeown, Yen Chiang, Amanda Giang, Gobi Sriranganathan and Luisa Lizoian) curled consistently, battling against a strong Jarvis team. The first end was blanked (meaning, no one scored) then UTS took charge. Final score 5-3.

UTS 2 (Raman Srivastava, Rahul Bhayani, Michael McEown, Mark Saffran) started strong against Jarvis in the first end, but by end 4, both teams were tied with two points each. In the LAST end, with the LAST rock, the Jarvis skip threw a perfect shot and it knocked out our stone, giving Jarvis a one point lead...or so we thought. As it turned out, the lead curler, in true Men with Brooms style, "burnt" (touched) the game winning rock while it was in play. Once burnt...no point! UTS’ stone was returned to its position to count, and Team 2 won the game 3-2.

UTS 3 (Andree Monette, Yen Chiang, David Wang, Julia Zisser) THE GAME OF THE DAY
After three ends of rough play, UTS 3 came back in the 4th end to score 3 points (no small feat)! Then, they turned around and score another 2 points in the final end. The Central Tech team was startled into submission! Final score 5-3.

CONGRATULATIONS! GO BLUES GO!

A strong debut for the Curling Team!

On Monday, January 8th, all three of UTS’ Curling teams met with some fierce competition from Rosedale.

Team UTS 1:
Led by Colleen McKeown (S6), Team 1 got off to a great start and held a respectable lead for the first two ends. Rosedale took a two-point end three, tying the game. The last end was a nail biter. When it came down to the last shot, Rosedale managed to swipe the final point to beat UTS 1 with a final score of 3-2.

Team UTS 2:
Under the leadership of Raman Srivastava (S6) with the help of Rahul Bhayani(S6), UTS 2 made a decisive victory of 5-3 over Rosedale. Considering three players on this team are first-year curlers, UTS 2 is looking at a very solid start to the year.

Team UTS 3:
Team 3 had a rockier season start, with four new curlers, and only one veteran (Skip Andree Monette (S6)), this team is sure to be most improved team of the year at season’s end. The team played with a lot of spirit and had a lot of fun with Adrian Chan (M3) scoring for the team.

Congratulation curlers! Go Blues go!!

GIRLS' JUNIOR VOLLEYBALL

Jr. Girls’ Volleyball team wins the TDSSAA championship!!

The Jr. Girls’ Volleyball team faced stiff competition during their final TDSSAA match on Tuesday, February 20th, but came out on top in hard-fought win!! The girls were up against the only team to defeat them their entire season – the Marc Garneau Cougars.

In the first set, the Blues started out cold and trailed Marc Garneau by 6 points. The girls put on the pressure & tied it up at 19-19, but couldn't keep it going, losing the first set: 25-19.

The team was down, but definitely not out. The second set was off to an even rougher start, with the girls were quickly trailing behind by 5, 7, then 9 points. But in true UTS fashion, the girls didn’t give up and fought hard. They caught up again, going from 12-21 to a 26-24 win – what an intense second set!

The pressure was on for the do-or-die third and final set – always the hardest. The Blues once again trailed the Cougars, 0-4 and then 2-5. They continued to tough it out, keeping their cool and working for every point. The girls were up at the switch, 8-6, and quickly went up 13-7. But the Cougars fought back, tightening up the score to 13-11 for UTS. The girls won the next point with a huge block at the net, for a final score of 15-11!!

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE JUNIOR GIRLS VOLLEYBALL TEAM FOR WINNING THE TDSSAA FINALS!

The girls went on to beat Central Tech in their semifinal match on Thursday, February 15th!

The first set started off pretty close, rallying back and forth until the score was 13-13. Then the girls shook off most of the nerves, tightened up their game and won in 2 sets: 25-20 and 25-17.

The Jr. Girls go on to play either Marc Garneau or Harbord at the South Region Championships on Tuesday, February 20th!

Jr. Girls’ Volleyball goes on to the quarter-finals!

Congratulations to the Jr. Girls’ Volleyball team for their win against Central Commerce on Monday, February 5th.

The team was there early, and ready to go. All of the girls served well and practiced their new positioning. The girls won in 2 very quick sets (even though the 2nd one looks close): 25-7, 25-19.

The girls continued their winning streak, beating Monarch Park in two sets on Wednesday, February 7th.

Their first set finished 25-21, with UTS always in the lead, but a few too many shaky serves. The girls fared far better in their second set, finishing 25-8, with the team cutting down on their errors.

The girls played their last season game against top-ranking Central Tech on Friday, February 9th here at UTS, and what a great game! The team won in 3 close sets: 25-12, 19-25 and 15-10.

The team was down 0-6 before they switched sides at 2-8 in the third set. The girls kept fighting and never gave up, storming back to take it 15-10.

The girls are now 8-1!!

The team’s quarterfinal match will be played at UTS on Tuesday, February 13th and the semifinal on Thursday, February 15th.

25-14 – the team was down 3-8, but the girls shook off the nerves and played with confidence in front of the home crowd.
25-11 - this set was all about serving and the occasional rally.

The Jr. Girls are 5-1 now, with only 3 more league games left before the playoffs!!

Jr. Girls’ Volleyball team on a winning streak!

After facing off against the big servers from Marc Garneau last week, the Jr. Blues hosted College Francais on Monday, January 15th.

It looked like it'd be a rough game since the first 4 points of the game were missed serves, but the girls battled through the nerves and really stepped up their play in front of the home crowd. We won in 2 sets: 25-20 and 25-20.

The girls won again against Rosedale on Wednesday, January 17th. The team was missing their middle hitter and libero, so this was a great win for the girls. They really believed that they could do it and fought for every ball.

The girls won in 3 sets:

25-19, with the team up 20-9 at one point.
19-25, with the girls down 1-7 at the start and we didn't get many serves in
16-14, with the team down 11-13 too - what a great time to start serving well!

The girls won yet again on Friday, January 19th against Harbord!!

The girls won in 2 sets:

25-14, where the team lost the first point on a serve that went straight up into the lights, but it was smooth sailing after that.
25-20, with more rallies and some better plays at the net by both teams as it was tied at 15 before the team started to pull away.

The Jr. Girls are 4-1 now!

Go ladies! Go Blues!

F1/2 Boys’ Basketball – Running Blues Victorious!

The F1/2 Boys’ Basketball team had a rocky start in the first half against the Leo Baeck School on Wednesday, January 17th. As the first half neared a close and the clock ticked down, echoed by the enormous UTS student fan support, 5-4-3-2, Adam Robarts, the point guard for the UTS Boys Foundation Basketball team, grabbed the basketball near UTS’ baseline, turned and launched an end of the first half desperation shot that sailed through the air with perfect backspin.

The crowd now stood silent for what seemed to be eternity ..... and then...... a "thunderous" SWOOSH echoed off the walls of the gym. Adam Robarts had sunk a court length three point shot! The crowd went crazy and the Running Blues never looked back as they defeated the Leo Baeck School’s excellent basketball team. Final score was 25 to 12 for UTS, with leading scorers Adam Robarts and Elvis Wong getting 5 points each.

The Running Blues play their league tournament Thursday Jan. 25th at the University of Toronto Athletic Centre - good luck boys!!!!

On Friday January 12th, the Jr. Blues shocked everyone by taking last year's champs, Humberside, down to the wire. Leading by 1-2 points throughout the first three quarters, but Humberside finally caught up to them in the 4th.

Jr. Boys’ Basketball team makes a comeback in the crunch!

The Junior Boys’ Basketball team came back with a win in a last minute clincher against the Harbord Tigers, on Monday, December 4th. With only a minute left and the Junior Blues were still 2 points behind with the Tigers in possession of the bar. As the clock ticked by the last three seconds, Rahim Noormohamed (M4) capped off a brilliant game by stealing the ball, sprinting half the court to make a lay-up, and getting fouled in the process. With the game tied and no time left, Rahim made his foul shot to cap off a remarkable team victory which saw break out performances by Nathan Au (M4) and Leo Ding (M3).

WAY TO GO JUNIOR BLUES!

The Junior Blues were busy at the end of last week. On Thursday, December 11th, the Blues came out strong against a strong and nimble West Toronto team. Trailing by only a few points at the half, unfortunately the Blues couldn’t keep it together in the second half of the game.

Heads held high, they spent a grueling day at the U of T Jamboree on Friday, December 12th, playing 5 games against teams from across the GTA. The tourney helped sharpen the boys skills, making them a much stronger and better team.

On Friday, December 1st, the boys faced a strong and well-oiled Marc Garneau Basketball team, and despite some gutsy performances by Isaac Kates-Rose and Rahim Noormohammed (both M4), unfortunately the Blues came up short.

FIELD HOCKEY

UTS Girls’ Field Hockey season on its way

The UTS Girls’ Field Hockey has had a challenging start to the season, but is gaining momentum with every game.

With a bit of a rough start this season, the girls lost their two early games to North Toronto and Lawrence. The second was especially difficult as the girls had dominated for much of the game but sometimes the last five minutes decide the outcome.

Bouncing back, the girls tied in their next games against Riverdale on Monday, September 25th and Malvern on Tuesday, September 26th. In both, the girls bravely fought against the elements. The Riverdale game posed a number of obstacles including puddles that the girls had to dodge and an uneven turf that sent the ball flying in undesired directions.

The girls fought hard during the Malvern game, as their turf had grass that was far too long so it frequently trapped the ball.

Coach Ms. Sanghera is especially proud of the girls’ last two games as this year's roster is made up, predominately, of new players. It’s a challenge being brand new to the sport and playing in Tier A but the team is up for it!

Best of luck girls!

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

Girls’ Basketball team played hard

The senior Girls’ Basketball team played their rivals the Central Tech Blues on Tuesday, October 3rd. In the first half, UTS struggled to put the points on the board and trailed 23-9 going into the half. The highlight of the game was when UTS came out in the second half with a huge power surge to close the gap to a 44-31 loss.

The girls kept the game tight with Coach Ms. Chorney saying “if we had at least 3 more minutes we probably would have stole the game.” The girls played extremely hard right to the very end and they should be proud of their accomplishment.

After a nail biter of a game, the girls came out on top again, beating Central Commerce 40 to 27 on Thursday, October 5th. With about four and a half minutes to go Central Commerce was up by one but after a quick time out the team put on their game faces, and went on a defensive stopping spree which lead the girls back on the offensive, outscoring their opponent by 12!

Keep playing strong! GO BLUES!

Boys’ Varsity Soccer remain undefeated

The Boys’ Varsity Soccer team played Eastern Commere on Tuesday, October 3rd. Kiva Dickinson (S5) was indefatigable, and Andrew Chan (S5) continued to inspire with his footwork and finally scored to tie the game in the first half, with the game ending in a tie.

Special mention goes to Peter Wills (S6) who played an integral defensive role in the second half and just missed putting one away from about 25 yards out.

The boys then played a tight game against West Toronto, winning 2-1 on Wednesday, October 4th.
Despite the mud and craters and the ball getting stuck to the ground at inopportune times, the Blues went ahead 2 nil by the half. West Toronto came out and scored early in the second half and the boys subsequently went into a defensive shell for the final 10 minutes as West Toronto mounted a valiant counter attack.

Then on Thursday, October 5th, the boys just beat Central Commerce 1-0. Stephen Rowlands (S5) put on a clinic and both Salvator Cusimano (S5) and Martin Ho (S6) played great defensive games.

UTS Boys’ Varsity Soccer team Play Tournament Finals

Congratulations to the Boys’ Soccer Team for playing a marathon tournament this past weekend. They won their first two games in the semi-finals, but fatigue set in during their final and 5th game against a team boasting the U-19 national team goalie and several rep level players. Highlights include three goals by Andrew Chan and three spectacular saves from Stephen Rowlands.

While playing, the boys were the definition of team, encouraging each other so much it began unnerving opposing teams. Coach Mr. Vince Danetta said the boys were “gentlemen to a fault”, handling “themselves with intelligence, poise and class right to the end.”

Congratulations boys on well-played tournament.
