Course Requirements

Courses leading to the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) have met ministry requirements and are taught in an enriched manner to prepare students for entry to university.

Foundation I: students must take 11 courses

Compulsory: English, French, Geography, Guidance and Computers, Health and Physical Education, History, Mathematics, Music, Romance of Antiquity (an introduction to the Classics) and Science. Ten hours of Community Service are required.

Foundation II: students must take 11 courses

Compulsory: Dramatic Arts, English, French, Geography, Health and Physical Education, History, Latin, Mathematics, Music, Science and Visual Art. Ten hours of Community Service are required.

Middle III: students must take 10 courses

Compulsory: Civics (half course), Core French* , English, Geography, Health and Physical Education, History (half course), Mathematics and Science. Twenty hours of Community Service are required.

In addition: Students must choose one Expressive Arts course (Drama, Music, or Visual Art) and choose their remaining courses from Languages (German, Latin, Spanish, or Special French) and /or Expressive Arts (Drama, Music, or Visual Art).
*Note: students who have taken FII Special French (FSF 1DS) have fulfilled this requirement.

Middle IV: students must take 8.5 courses

Compulsory: Career Studies (half course), English, Health and Physical Education, Mathematics and one senior Science. Twenty hours of Community Service are required.

Electives: An additional 4 courses must be chosen. A balance among all of the disciplines should be maintained to ensure the opportunity to complete the breadth requirements in University Preparation (S6) courses.

Senior V: students must take 7 courses

Compulsory: English, Health and Physical Education, Mathematics, and the SV Guidance Seminar (non-credit).

Electives: An additional 4 credit courses must be chosen.

Notes: In planning for SV and SVI, students must ensure that they take a minimum of seven 4U/M courses, including SVI English. In addition, at least one 4U or 4M course from two of the following four subject groupings:

  • Arts
  • Canadian & World Studies / Social Sciences & Humanities
  • Languages
  • Mathematics, Sciences & Technology

Senior VI: students must take 6 courses

Compulsory: English, the SVI Guidance Seminar (non-credit).

Electives: An additional 5 additional credit courses must be chosen, ensuring that the student has a minimum of seven 4U/M courses.
