Varsity Badminton

Regional Championships

The UTS Varsity Badminton team participated in the Regional Championships on Thursday, April 9 at Harbord Collegiate. Of eight UTS teams, five qualified for the Regionals (boys singles, girls singles, boys A doubles, girls A doubles and mixed A doubles).

The results were as follows:

Boys' Singles: Oscar Chak - 5th place (with 2 National level players in the draw)
Boys' Doubles: Brian Ma and Jason Kwok - 2nd place (silver medal)
Girls' Singles: Grace Luo - 5th place (Grade 9 rookie player!)
Girls' Doubles: Judith Ma and Denise Wong - 2nd place (silver medal)
Mixed Doubles: Darren Mak and Cheryl Young - 3rd place (bronze medal)

Overall, the team as a whole won 2nd place to Riverdale Collegiate, and our girls' team also shared 1st place with Jarvis Collegiate for the top overall girls' team in the South Region!

In addition, Oscar Chak earned a spot in the Cities, as did the UTS boys' doubles and girls' doubles teams. A scheduling conflict with the national and provincial (OFSAA) competitions this year meant that our mixed A team – which includes Darren Mak, a national level player - couldn't move on to the Cities. Also noteworthy is that Grace Luo just missed making it to Cities but held the alternate spot in 5th place.

City Championships

The City Championships were held on Tuesday, April 14 and Wednesday, April 15. Unfortunately, the UTS girls’ team had to withdraw due to a conflict with one of the OFSAA dates. The boys' singles (Oscar) and boys' doubles (Brian and Jason) played some tough matches and ended up not earning spots in the final OFSAA draw. However they played with great heart and sportsmanship.

It was another great season for UTS. We sadly say good-bye to five UTS players who leave us
next year (Oscar Chak, Brian Ma, Judith Ma, Michael Wan, Denise Wong). Each has left a great mark on UTS Varsity Badminton and many great memories. We wish them all the best!

WINTER HIGHLIGHTS

FOUNDATION BOYS' BASKETBALL

F1/2 Boys' Basketball play down to the wire at their season tournament

On Thursday, January 29, the F1/2 Boys' Basketball team travelled to George Brown College for their "season" tournament. The team won two and lost two, narrowly missing out on qualifying for the Finals. All the boys played with a lot of heart and displayed a lot of integrity on and off the court. In particular, our starting five of Sunil Mall, Shamir Pira, Joon Kim, Peter Wang and Alex Levy played with tremendous intensity and togetherness. The team is rounded out by:

Dhilan Bekah, Josh Feldman, Jeremy Gungabeesoon, Ian Lee
Griffin Brockman, Robertson McClure, George Radner, Ajay Shah, Daniel Henke Tarnow, Raymond Yu

The team thanks Coach Hank Clark for his many hours of volunteering, and Coach Neuton Watson for modelling not only what it means to be a great basketball player, but also a great person. Thanks also to Jeff Kennedy for organizing a fantastic tournament and making sure everything ran smoothly.

Now for the play by play...

The Blues' first game was against Essex, a team that over the past two years has defeated UTS four games in a row by one or two points. A fifth loss to Essex would have sent the coaches into early retirement, but the boys showed tremendous strength in holding on for a one-point victory (W 24-23)!

The boys’ next game against Courcelette was a little easier, and the starters built up enough of a lead to make sure everyone on our team had a chance to play (W 27-23).

The Blues then faced the number one seed Market Lane. The boys knew they had a challenge ahead when they saw a few of their 6+ foot players were hanging off the rim during warm-ups! After a tough first half (down 26-4) the boys regrouped and almost played even with Market Lane for the rest of the game (L 44-20).

It all came down to the Blues' final game of the round robin versus Ryerson, with the winner going on to the Final. It was a back and forth affair right down to the final few moments, but in the end Ryerson came out on top (L 33-28).

Congratulations boys! GO BLUES GO!

Varsity Girls’ Volleyball team spikes a spot at OFSAA!

In what turned out to be a thrilling afternoon of volleyball in the Upper FEUT gym on Thursday, February 5, the Senior Girls' Volleyball team prevailed over Bloor Collegiate, 2-0, in a sea-saw game that was full of emotion and excitement. Trailing early on in the first set, 6-2, the team hung in there and fought back to capture an incredible set of volleyball, eventually winning, 30-28, on a stuff block by Kalyna Franko to seal the deal. Full of confidence from the first set, the Blues controlled the second set and had Bloor on their heels all game, eventually taking it 25-20 on a "kill" by Emma Barrett to finish them off.

Special thanks to staff and an energetic student body who attended the game and cheered the Blues on right until the final point!

With the win, the girls move onto the A/AA City Semi-Finals and have secured themselves a spot in the Single A OFSAA championships at Trinity College in Port Hope, Ontario in March!

Coach Gary Kollins is very proud of the team and their efforts this season. Special recognition goes out to the S6's, Sarah Coyne, Alyssa Parpia, Han Yan, Kalyna Franko, YangYang Xu, and Sashi Lankage, who have worked so hard in improving their skills over the past four years in a UTS Blues volleyball uniform and can end their UTS volleyball journey with a trip to OFSAA.

As well, the Blues’ success couldn't have been possible without outstanding contributions from the team’s S5's, Emma Barrett, Liz Irish, Connie Yu, Connie Zhao, Kelly Kan, and Amy Jiang, who have been exceptional throughout the season.

The team wrapped up their regular season at the G.S. Henry tournament on Friday, February 6.

Varsity Girls' Volleyball has a courageous season

It has been a courageous season thus far for our Varsity Girls’ Volleyball team. Led by team captain, Kalyna Franko and a co-captain, Sarah Coyne, the team dropped a tough game on Wednesday, January 14, to "arch rivals" Western Tech to drop their season record to 1-3. The girls have been working extremely hard since November and the improvements are evident. The team participated in a very tough York Mills Tournament back in December, and were at Danforth Collegiate for an all day tournament against schools from across the TDSB on Friday, January 16. Playing in a strong Tier 1 division has definitely helped our game. The girls will need to win 2 of their last 3 games to have a chance at the Single A Provincial Playdowns in March. Best of luck to our Varsity Girls Volleyball team as they finish off the regular season this month. Next home game was today at 4:00 pm vs Parkdale. Come out and see them in action.

CURLING

Curling Team Victory

The game against North Toronto on Wednesday February 11 was great! Both teams were close in the first end, but Wilson Wai grabbed a single point on the very last shot. The next end saw both teams blank the end (no score), so when Jacob Barrett, Thilo Schaefer, Adrian Chan and Wilson went into the third they had no idea they would, through a series of serendipitous events, line up their rocks in such a way that the opposing team would hit one, knocking the others in to score 4 points for our team. Final score 7-0! According to Coach Julie Stoyka, it was the best offensive game our team has played this year. Team members are:

UTS B: Wilson Wai, Adrian Chan, Thilo Schaefer, and Jacob Barrett.

UTS G: Melanie Adler, Daphne Xu, Chloe Chau, Alex Chow, and Karen Morenz.

UTS 1: Samir Kulkarni, Andrew Kowalczyszyn, Annie Cheung, Bonnie Cheung, and Allan Zhang.

UTS Curling teams split the rocks at the start of the season

UTS Co-ed team defeats Silverthorn, while the Boys team ties West Toronto

In their first game of the season, the Co-ed curling team won a decisive victory over Silverthorn Collegiate Institute on Tuesday, January 13. Despite dressing only three team members, lead Annie Cheung, second Bonnie Cheung and skip Andrew Kowalczyszyn made some great shots to come out with a 5-1 victory. The game was on the line in the last end, when Silverthorn was sitting 3 with the hammer and the skips with only one rock each left to throw, but Kowalczyszyn remained calm and delivered a come-around draw that landed squarely on the pin hole. With the shot rock buried, the opposing skip had a difficult shot which she failed to execute. Congratulations to Annie, Bonnie and Andrew.

In what turned out to be a much more heated battle, the boys of UTS played West Toronto to a 6-6 tie. After stealing one in the first end, UTS went down by three in the second end. After fifteen rocks were thrown in the third end, the game looked like it might be out of reach with West Toronto sitting 3. Undaunted, skip Wilson Wai managed to draw the button with his last rock, scoring one and keeping UTS in the game. In the fourth end, UTS capitalized on their position and scored an amazing 4 points, after the opposing skip successively missed a take-out attempt and a difficult draw to the 4-foot.

After a nail-biter of a third end, UTS kept the opposition side to 2 points, and with less than 15 minutes left, the game was called a tie. Please congratulate Wai, Jake Brockman, Thilo Schaefer, and Adrian Chan on a great game against a far more experienced rink.

On Thursday, January 8, UTS Boys' Curling team won over Oakwood 6-5 in 5 ends. Under the direction of Wilson Wai, the boys scored one point in each of the first two ends before Oakwood came tearing back in the third end with three. However, the fourth end turned out to be decisive when the UTS boys managed to score 4 points through excellent use of the "take-out", a specialty of the Wai rink. The final end was a nail-biter, but Wai managed to keep the house clear in the early stages of the frame and allowed Oakwood to score only an insufficient two points. Please congratulate Wai, Thilo Schafer, Adrian Chan and Jake Brockman on their victory, which ends a drought going back to the 2006-2007 season.

UTS Girls' Curling team, while making some excellent individual shots, still have some work to do to be competitive. They played with honour and heart. Please wish Skip Melanie Adler and her rink Daphne Xu, Chloe Chau, Alex Chow and Karen Morenz well at their next match.

Back on Monday, December 15, all three of UTS Curling teams got hit hard by the rocks, losing all three games. But there is a silver lining:

The following members of the Co-ed team -
Samir Kulkarni
Andrew Kowalczyszyn
Allan Zhang
Jacob Barrett
and sub Andres Salgado-Bierman played well and only lost by one point - final score 3-2.

The Boys team, Wilson Wai, Adrian Chan, Jake Brockman, and Thilo Schaefer, were taught a curling lesson or two by their 17-year-old girl competitors, with a final score 6-0. The female skip was amazing and directly responsible for the other team's win.

The Girls team, Melanie Adler, Chloe Chau, Alex Chow and Karen Morenz, had yet another curling lesson delivered to them courtesy of the Etobicoke Collegiate Institute Boys team (and reigning champs from last year).

The first game of the season is always the toughest, but the team is looking forward to their next game on January 8th!!!

SWIMMING

UTS Swim team dive into the season

The UTS swim team started their season off on Friday, November 21, in very good form at the UofT Invitational Meet. Traditionally a great meet to begin the season as the competition is always good and it gives UTS swimmers a chance to get some nerves out of the way and get their first race times of the season. Chris Lui and newcomer to the swim team, Tasha Stansbury started off our meet with excellent efforts in the 100m Butterfly, both placing 4th in their events (out of 12 teams) and earning UTS some big points. In the next event, 100m Breaststroke, Jackie Hung was unbeatable, placing 1st with an excellent race and Michael Chen followed with a very strong 3rd place finish. Both swimmers added huge points to our total score. Senior swimmers, Julie Ting and Mihai Chelaru-Centea stepped up and put their endurance to the test by competing in the 200m Freestyle event (racing for 8 lengths of the pool). This event is not a popular one because of its length and therefore not all schools enter swimmers into it. By taking on the challenge alone, Julie and Mihai, who both placed 10th, helped UTS continue to add points to the overall score (top 16 in each event earn points). The 50 Freestyle, the most popular event, had a total of 140 girls and 106 boys competing for the top 16 spots . UTS girls had 3 swimmers (Natalie Kong, Grace Kim and Connie Yu) in the top 16 out of 140 and the boys had Chris Cao placing 13th out of 106 swimmers. This event was also the debut of many of our rookie swimmers to the team. Coach Winston and Coach Ewing were very pleased with their performances and look forward to seeing what they accomplish over the rest of the season. Results for the rest of the meet follow:

4 x 50m Junior Medley Relay
- GIRLS: 2nd (Neha Arora, Jackie Hung, Leslie Newcombe and Tasha Stansbury) and 6th (Emily Chen, Grace Kim, Emily Luk and Rachel Park)
- BOYS: 5th (Robert Guo, Jeremy Lee, Colin Wang and Frederick Wong).

50m Backstroke
- GIRLS: 3rd (Jackie Hung), 8th (Natalie Kong), 11th (Connie Yu)

100m Individual Medley
- GIRLS: 15th (Natlie Kong) and 16th (Neha Arora)
- BOYS: 6th (Chris Lui), 13th (Michael Chen) and special mention to Jeremy Lee who placed 17th.

4 x 50m Senior Medley Relay
- GIRLS: 8th (Natalie Kong, Julie Ting, Keara Yim and Connie Yu)
- BOYS: 5th (Mihai Chelaru-Centea, Michael Chen, Chris Cao and Chris Lui)

100m Freestyle
- BOYS: 11th (Chris Cao) and Jeremy Lee (18th)

50m Butterfly
- GIRLS: 10th (Emily Luk)

50m Breaststroke
6th (Grace Kim), 10th (Leslie Newcombe), 14th (Keara Yim) - special mention to the 6 rookie swimmers that also swam this event (Emily Chen, Stephanie Chan, Tasha, Emily Luk, Ana Komparic and Vanessa Deverell)
3rd (Chris Cao) and 11th (Robert Guo)

100m Backstroke
- GIRLS: Jackie Hung placed 1st and achieved a personal best time.

4 x 50m Senior Free Relay
- GIRLS: 10th (Cathy Dai, Vanessa Deverell, Ana Komparic, Ziya Khamis)

In the end, the UTS boys placed 6th overall and the UTS girls placed 5th overall out of the 12 teams taking part in the meet. A terrific start to the season and now we turn our attention to preparing for our 1st league meet which happens on Wednesday, December 17, at Harbord Collegiate where the UTS Blues take on Lawrence Park, Central Tech and Western Tech. GO BLUES!!

Melanie Adler led the team with 14 points. On Wednesday, October 15, the team outscored Forest Hill in the second half, however couldn't erase a nine point half-time deficit, losing 34-26. Kalyna Franko dominated the paint, while Emma Barrett chipped in with some nice assists and good defense.

Sr. Girls' Basketball split their season record to 3-3

The Senior Girls' Basketball team suffered two defeats last week to the hands of Ursula Franklin Academy and Jarvis Collegiate. The girls played aggressively against a very strong Jarvis side, however, like the Varsity Boys’ Soccer team, they have a tough time scoring. The Blues drop their record to 3-2 on the season and continued their league play with a game against Central Tech on Wednesday, October 8.

The Central Tech game was a "nail biter" to Central Tech to the very end, with the Blues losing 20-19, on Wednesday, October 8. The Blues had a chance for the miracle buzzer beater with 2.4 seconds to play, however Melanie Adler's long range jumper fell short. Melanie played a terrific game, scoring 12 points and leading the team with her energy and hustle. Unfortunately, the team had trouble putting the ball in the basket. Emma Barrett played a strong game off the bench rebounding at both ends of the court, while Irene Lum made some good passes in the Blues’ half court sets.

The team drops to 3-3 on the year and has a tough back to back after the long weekend against Parkdale Collegiate today and Forest Hill tomorrow

Alyssa Parpia played some physical defense, enough to get under the skin of an aggressive Commerce team. Shuhe Li rebounded well off the bench, and Eva Huang, Jennifer Nguyen, Shu Yang Hu, and Christine Robson did a good job in a supporting role.

Special mentions go to:
-Mark Bancroft who gave it all in the final dash passing the leader and taking first place in the Grade 8 division.
-Emma Clarke finished strong coming in third, followed by Anthea Ho who came in at seventh.
-F1 Quentin Wang showed off his speed placing 7th in his division.

It was an excellent meet in which UTS showed off its speed and stamina. Thirteen UTS students will compete at the next meet on October 16th. Wish them speed!

FIELD HOCKEY

Girls' Field Hockey take on the city’s top teams

The Girls' Field Hockey team played their first match against Lawrence Park at Birchmount Stadium on Monday, October 6.

The first half opened with UTS applying steady pressure on Lawrence, keeping most of the play in their zone. Learning from last Thursday’s game, the team stayed smartly aggressive even though they were daunted by the height of the Lawrence Park players. But the Blues quickly spotted the faults in their opponent's game and, as they ran off for their subs, gave those on the side-lines quick pep talks. The girls learned that Lawrence Park were strong hitters, good trappers but sloppy passers and weak at communicating with their players. All this, we used to our advantage with Connie Yu holding her stick nearly flat to the ground to break a Lawrence hit, Lebei Pi breaking a pass with lightning quickness, Hannah Kopinski catching Lawrence's missed passes, and Lauren Friedman, as usual, playing every position on the field.

In the second half, the Blues had four short corner chances in a row but, unfortunately, failed to capitalize. In the last minute of play, the Blues made a critical error, allowing Lawrence to take possession and making Rabea Parpia sweat it out for the last 60 seconds. The team lost a critical match last year this way.

But, fortunately, the girls fought Lawrence off and tied 0-0.

The team was hesitant before their game against Malvern on Tuesday, October 7. All of the Blues’ most experienced players were absent, but present in spirit. Malvern also happened to be the number one ranked team in the league!

But there was magic played out on the field. Hannah Kopinski stepped up as captain, drawing up the starting line-up and giving the girls a pep-talk.

The Blues hit the field and, although, much of the first half was played in our zone not a single goal was scored by Malvern. Alex Chow, with an instinctive feel, broke up a number of Malvern passes. Jennifer Yu deked around players and took possession of the ball. Shivon Yim stepped up with some powerful hits. Natalie Kong, Amy Jiang, and Abigail Ferstman stepped up to defend our posts. Abigail even stepped up to stop a shot with her body. Gia Ahn, Liz Irish, and Annabel Sibalis were ready for any Malvern slip-ups and chances to carry the ball up and out of our zone. Juliana Richniak and Athena Ko ran out to give much needed break to our girls. Daniela Chang and Samantha Mathialagan watched with critical eyes so they could help de-brief the girls during half-time.

The second half opened with a quick Malvern goal but the only goal in the game. Even the Malvern coach was impressed with the Blues and, at one point, shouted out "great save!" at UTS’ goalie!

With our defensive approach and a number of brilliant saves by Rabea Parpia, the Blues managed to fight off Malvern's hammering.

Girls' Field Hockey tie a tough game

It rained. It was cold. But the sun eventually came out, warming our girls who were slowly starting to freeze out on the field at Birchmount stadium in their game against Riverdale Collegiate on Thursday, October 2.

It was their first time playing on turf this season. And turf certainly proved to have its pros and cons. It allowed smooth passes, long hits, and lots of intricate stick work with the girls carrying the ball forward, drawing to the right, and deftly passing through the legs of opposing players. . .all while maintaining control which is incredibly difficult to do when playing on grass.

But turf is tough as well. A lot of smooth, quick play also means a lot of running around. And our girls ran what, at times, felt like mini-marathon sessions. Connie Yu proved to be especially aggressive, charging each time Riverdale took possession.

But, as always, there were things to work on. There was a feeling of hesitation out on the field. The Blues became timid each time Riverdale carried the ball into our defensive zone! Rabea Parpia saved the team on more than one occasion and to keep the game tied at 0-0. And that's where it stood at final whistle.

Girls' Field Hockey season debut

With nearly five practices under their belt, the Girls’ Field Hockey team headed off to Eglinton Park for their first match of the season against Leaside High School, on Tuesday, September 23.

In the last three minutes of the first half, the Blues applied steady pressure on Leaside and, in the dying seconds, were awarded with their first goal thanks to Lauren Friedman and an assist by Shivon Yim.

During half-time, though, the girls were warned that they were at their most vulnerable. Having a goal scored on their net, Leaside would start the second half fighting. And they did, scoring two goals against UTS in quick succession. The team momentarily panicked on the field but did an admirable job of protecting our net.

Highlights included: Arden Azim breaking up nearly a dozen Leaside plays, the defense of four short-corner attacks on the UTS net, and a limping Lauren who shrugged off substitutes and insisted on playing.

Special thanks to U of T Coaches Kri Shire and Alice Zhao, who helped with a pre-game pep-talk and goalie-focused coaching.

Varsity Boys' Soccer play two tough games

The Varsity Boys' Soccer team played a tough match on Monday, October 6, and once again came up just short. The first half was pretty even, with both teams struggling to control the ball on a pitch that resembled a bombed-out battle field. Unfortunately, Forest Hill took advantage of a defensive error by the Blues and went up 1 - 0 mid way through the half.

The Blues came out hard for the second half and took the play to Forest Hill creating many opportunities. But, the goals are very elusive this season and the game ended 1 - 0 for Forest Hill.

The boys played another difficult match Danforth Tech on Wednesday, October 8. They came out strong and scored a quick goal to take an early lead. The weather turned nasty, but the Blues didn't let up. In the first 20 minutes the team hit the post at least once and also the cross bar, but did not score. As the pitch became more muddy, the game slowed and both teams took it to each other. The half ended with UTS leading 1 - 0, and Andy Seo wondering why his shots kept hitting the keeper or the post and nothing in between.

Danforth Tech adjusted their game for the second half and had a slight advantage. Then, with the rain pouring, they capitalized on a defensive error and tied the game.

Varsity Boys' Soccer tie a tough game

Congratulations to the Varsity Boys’ Soccer team for coming off a big loss last week and playing a hard fought game against Western Tech on Monday, September 29. The game ended 0 - 0 with the teams exchanging chances, although none better than the ball Rahim Noormohamed put off the cross bar with only a couple of minutes left in the game.

The boys played another tough match against a speedy and skillful team from Central Commerce on Wednesday, October 1. The first half was painfully slow with the ball in the Blues’ end a lot, but the whistle blowing constantly. Central Commerce eventually got the better of us and went up 1 - 0. The Blues had a much more energetic start to the second half and started generating great offence. The team carried the majority of the play in the second half. Late in the half the Blues pushed forward in hopes of scoring an equalizer. Unfortunately, the team couldn't quite finish despite a number of pretty good chances. Central Commerce scored at the whistle to win 2 - 0.

UTS Tennis takes home Silver!

The UTS Boys' and Girls' Tennis teams brought home Silver after tough matches at the South Region final on Thursday, October 17, at Winston Churchill Tennis club. It was a fine finish for both teams after very exciting seasons.

This was the girls' first time at the South Region Final. The Girls' Tennis team lost a tough match to Malvern, 5-3. Bridget Zhang and Fern Ramoutar won on line three and Bianca Boldisteanu and Liz Irish won very easily on line 4. The team lost line one, so the match fell onto the lap of line two, Chalini Lankage and Eliza Pope. It was an extremely close 7-6, 7-6 battle. Their match was about 45 minutes longer than all of the others! A great effort was made by all of the girls and they should be proud of the team’s first performance in the South Region final!

To secure their place in the South Region Final, the girls defeated Ursula Franklin Academy 6-2 on Tuesday, October 14, on Thursday, October 16. This is the first time the girl's tennis team has made it this far. It was an extremely close match. Bianca Boldisteanu and Liz Irish won convincingly on line 4 by a score of 6-0, 6-1. When they came off the court, they found out that each of lines 1, 2 and 3 had all lost the first set in their respective matches. The team needed to win this match otherwise they would have lost based on sets. Sarah Coyne and Deryn Jakolev played extremely well and won 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 to earn the girls a spot in the finals.

The Boys' A Tennis took on Northern in the Final, but lost by a score of 5-2. The boys fought hard for every point, but the Northern team was too strong. This is the fifth consecutive year the UTS Boys’ Tennis team has played in the Final.

The team made the finals of the Tier II division five years ago. Last year the team won the South Region championship and went on to win the District championship – let’s hope for the same luck this year!

Josh Budman and Cyrus Elmpak-Mackie played well on line one winning 6-1, 7-6. They had to fight off three set points in the second set. The team won line four by default. UTS secured the win as Adam Robarts and Surinder Jaidka won a set on line three. The pair was also ahead in the third set when the victory was declared.

A tough game for the Varsity Boys' Volleyball team

The Varsity Boys' Volleyball team had a tough game against Jarvis Collegiate on Tuesday, September 30. An early UTS lead in the first set proved to be deceptive, as Jarvis chipped away to take a slight lead after one rotation of servers for each side. Then Jarvis really opened it up to coast to a 25-16 win. Both sides had plenty of mistakes, but the second set had much better play with both teams working hard for every single point. The game went back and forth, almost point for point at times, but in the end of the second set UTS prevailed with a score of 25-23. Sadly, the momentum out of the second set became suffocated in the tie-breaking third; Jarvis managed to become very consistent with some big hits and very challenging serves, and UTS went down to defeat, 15-5.
