Our objective is to steward students through their entire UTS careers, providing support that ensures they can realize their full potential. Through curricular and co-curricular programs, as well as individualized supports, our staff fosters academic and personal growth, while emphasizing overall wellness and positive habits for a healthy lifestyle. This includes striving for broad acceptance and understanding of differences, within a climate of equity and inclusion. In addition, our counsellors guide students through a comprehensive consideration of the many opportunities available after graduation from UTS, and appropriate planning for admission to post-secondary institutions.

Our commitment to our students extends to enhancing overall wellness. We strive to ensure that students develop an understanding of the basic building blocks of a healthy lifestyle – sleep, nutrition, exercise, and positive community relationships.

It is now widely understood that physical exercise has a positive impact on brain function and helps improve alertness, attention, mood and motivation. UTS is one of the few schools in Ontario that has compulsory physical education from grade 7 to grade 11, despite the fact that only one physical education credit is mandatory to earn an Ontario Secondary School Diploma.

We are also striving to enhance positive mental health for all our community members. A resilience strand in our F1 (grade 7) program is offered in partnership with the Canadian Positive Psychology Association. Mindfulness is an important component of our F2 (grade 8) program. In addition, our health and physical education and student services staff members are working together to ensure that mental health is addressed throughout our curriculum. Our co-curricular Wellness Team is also committed to promoting all aspects of wellness at UTS.

There are a number of programs and supports to help students grow academically and emotionally throughout their time at UTS. We also look ahead and help students explore and prepare for the opportunities that will be available to them once they graduate from the school. These initiatives are administered by the Office of Student Services which consists of three full-time guidance counselors, a full-time social worker, and a full-time learning strategist. Each student is assigned to a guidance counsellor for assistance and support over the course of the student’s time at UTS.

Individualized Support

We are committed to ensuring that students who have been identified with a learning difference receive the accommodations they deserve and require, as well as the self-advocacy skills needed to manage their learning differences throughout life. We are also striving to promote understanding about learning differences and to tackling stigma.

Guidance & Planning

During the F1 and F2 (grade 7 and 8) years, the guidance curriculum focuses on developing individual executive functioning skills and positive mental wellness and awareness. As students transition into their senior years, the focus shifts to post-secondary and career planning while still emphasizing wellness.

Post-Secondary Admissions Support

We offer extensive support to students as they research and apply to post-secondary programs, and help them identify opportunities that represent a "good fit". M4 (grade 10) students take a mandatory Career Studies course. In S5 and S6 (grades 11 and 12), students participate in a mandatory guidance seminar during which they further explore the post-secondary options that might be of interest to them. Students work with their guidance counsellor throughout these years to develop an appropriate academic plan that enables them to have the required prerequisite courses to apply to their programs of choice.

At the end of the S5 (grade 11) year, individual meetings are set up with students and their parents/guardians for an in-depth look at the post-secondary application plan, with the guidance counsellor. Students and counsellors continue to meet throughout the S6 (grade 12) year to review the various application requirements.

Commitment to equity and inclusion informs everything we do – beginning with merit-based admission and financial accessibility. The school’s Mutual Respect Policy, and Equity and Inclusive Education Policy, together articulate the principles that shape interactions for all members of the UTS community: staff, students, parents, and alumni. Both policies provide a framework to guide our decisions and actions.

The Mutual Respect Policy aims to ensure an environment free from discrimination, harassment, violence, bullying and abuse. It does this by promoting responsibility, respect, civility, academic excellence and a safe learning, teaching and working environment.

Through the Equity and Inclusive Education Policy, UTS aims to:

  • Create an inclusive learning environment that respects individual differences and multiple perspectives.
  • Develop students’ ethical integrity and character.
  • Give community members the tools, vocabulary, insight and confidence to build an equitable and inclusive community.
  • Advocate for those who are targets of unnoticed or unchallenged discrimination.

Land Acknowledgement

We acknowledge the land we are situated on is the traditional territory of many nations including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples and is now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. We also acknowledge that the land is covered by Treaty 13 with the Mississaugas of the Credit.
