University of Toronto Schools is thrilled to announce that Dr. Avis Glaze will join the school as a consultant to review and build on our current and past efforts in the areas of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, and the overarching human rights domain.

To date, many members of our community played a vital role in this domain and have supported this critical pillar of our strategic plan to examine and refine the ways in which we strive to be an inclusive school community that upholds human rights and stands up to racism and consciously  applies the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion to every facet of our school culture, programs, policies, and procedures.

Dr. Glaze will build on the foundational work accomplished over the years by our Equity Committee. Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) became a strategic pillar of UTS in 2015 and has a longer history going back to 2004. This past year, the Committee was co-led by Nasreen Khan (Director of EDI) and Makeda Daley (Director of Outreach and Community Engagement). Previously, the EDI Committee was led by Marc Brims, Lily McGregor, and Anand Mahadevan and benefited from the work and passion of many members of our staff, students, parents and alumni, but especially a core group of teachers: James Campbell, Kris Ewing, Gabrielle Kemeny, Rebecca Levere, Maureen McCarthy, Charlie Pullen, Sue Thompson, and Nicola Townend, who spearheaded the original UTS Equity Framework.

In particular, Dr. Glaze will work with UTS for the period of May 2021 through January 2022 to:

  • review our progress to date in the Human Rights domain of Anti-racism, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and identify gaps and areas for improvement; an integral component of this review is that she will be gathering perspectives from a broad cross-section of the students, staff, parents, and alumni;
  • work with the school community to develop a leadership model for the future related to Anti-racism, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion to support the school to implement this leadership model and establish clear goals/expectations for the future.

Dr. Glaze is an international leader in the field of education and a recognized expert in the domain of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. She has worked with some 50 jurisdictions around the world. She has supported governments, schools, and school districts in the following spheres:

  • Student achievement and well-being;
  • Diversity Search and Talent Development;
  • Mentoring and Coaching of Leaders from Diverse Backgrounds;
  • Equity and Diversity Training for Educators;
  • Equity Audits (schools and districts).

Dr. Glaze holds two Master degrees in Education:  one in educational administration, and one in guidance and counselling. She also holds a doctorate in education from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), University of Toronto. Dr. Glaze has received recognition and accolades for her work with more than thirty awards for outstanding contribution to education. She was awarded the Order of Ontario for her extensive contributions to education in our Province.

Dr. Glaze has also received commendations for her work in countries such as Norway, the US, and New Zealand. Indeed, Dr. Glaze’s experience and advice is sought after internationally. She is currently an International Education Advisor appointed by the First Minister of Scotland. Through her consulting company, Edu-quest International, Dr. Glaze works with schools and educators to promote leadership development, equity initiatives, school and system improvement around the world.

Starting May 2021, Dr. Glaze will work closely with UTS leadership to assess our current policies and help us determine areas of improvement.  She will also guide us as we establish a clear path forward and a leadership model that is appropriate for UTS in building a school community with truly inclusive values, practices, policies, and relationships as well as support for open and respectful dialogue.

We are very much looking forward to working together in partnership with Dr. Glaze, to advance human rights at UTS with a roadmap guided by her wealth of knowledge and leadership in the field of Equity, Inclusion, Diversity and Anti-Racism, to become a better organization.
